Ultraviolet Sterilization Systems
Ultraviolet (UV) systems are used for disinfection purposes. Disinfection with UV systems deactivates microorganisms without the addition of any chemicals or oxidants to the water.
These systems emit UV rays into the water using a low-pressure mercury lamp placed within a glass sleeve. This process disrupts the DNA and RNA structures of the microorganisms, rendering them inactive. Since the disinfection is achieved without the use of heat or chemicals, it does not alter the taste or the chemical composition of the water.
The UV lamps should be replaced annually, after about 9000 hours of use, although this lifespan can vary depending on the manufacturer.
